Gonna get downvoted but oh well…. This is something I’ve been genuinely curious about. Why do so many K-pop fans seem to primarily listen to groups from HYBE, SM, JYP, and YG? Why don’t more people give smaller-company groups a chance?
I used to be like this too, so I’m not trying to judge anyone. I mostly listened to popular groups and didn’t really pay much attention to smaller agencies. But once I started branching out and listening to groups from smaller companies, I realized there’s actually SO much good music out there that I was missing.
It’s honestly kind of sad because some of these groups have amazing discographies, talented members, and really interesting concepts, but they barely get any attention simply because they’re not from a big agency. They also don’t have the same promotional opportunities, marketing budgets, or exposure that Big 4 groups get, which makes it even harder for them to reach a wider audience.
I understand that people naturally gravitate toward what’s popular, and there’s nothing wrong with having your favorite groups.
I’m curious: Do you guys actively listen to smaller-company groups? If not, what’s stopping you? And for those who do, have you ever discovered a group that completely surprised you?
I recently discovered 8Turn, thanks to 82world, and became a huge fan of them now! I love all of their musics and recently saw them performed in my city. Not saying that all small agency groups can make it, but it doesn’t hurt to listen/broaden out and listen to other groups too. There’s too many talented groups where it’s hard to keep up and they disband cause there’s not enough traction to them too 😭
