Which K-pop group had the most “out of the box” debut concept?

They say first impressions are everything, and in the world of K-pop, a debut concept can truly set the trajectory for a group’s entire career. I’ve been reflecting on some of the most “out of the box” entries we’ve seen over the years.

Groups like EXO with their literal superpower lore or f(x) with their experimental, avant-garde sound and styling had such distinct vibes right from the jump. As a huge SONE, I also can’t help but think back to SNSD’s debut. While it might seem “simple” by today’s standards, their clean, athletic, and pure image was such a breath of fresh air that perfectly captured the “Nation’s Girl Group” energy before they became the legends they are today.

Looking back through the generations from the bizarre to the high-tech, which debut concept felt the most unique or ahead of its time to you? Was there a group that made you think, “I’ve never seen anything like this before”?

Also, for the newer fans, have any recent debuts (like aespa’s metaverse or NewJeans’ Y2K surprise drop) given you that same “wow” factor? I’d love to hear your thoughts and see which debuts still live rent-free in your head!
