Seriously. Look at TNT by CORTIS. Two minutes and two seconds. For a EP consisting of a grand total of 15 minutes with SIX songs.
We need to sit down and actually talk about this. Short songs have never been a problem. Optimization is. Made-for-clicks songs is. Corporations dictating musical trends is. And this is one of the most egregious examples I’ve seen so far this year.
Honestly, is anyone else so goddamn sick and tired of it? I am. If so, then we need to show it. We need to stop streaming songs that are blatantly made for cash-grabs. (I know, this is the kpop industry, “made for cash-grabs” is basically an oxymoron, but right now, they’re not even trying to hide it.) We need to stop Stockholm Syndroming ourselves into liking songs made largely by companies that quite literally think that WE, the “consumers”, the FANS, the enjoyers, are idiots.
But we are not. Look at this. We’ve had RUDE!, we’ve had 404 (New Era), we’ve also had Catch Catch, Save Me, IVE’s latest album, and that’s just to name a few… it’s not like kpop is a wasteland at the moment, it’s NOT… but we need to stop making slop music blow up.
Music is subjective, of course, but also, we shouldn’t let go of our standards in the name of our faves. We must be here for the music first and foremost. It’s not even just about length, it’s about the love of good music.
