First off, I want to preface this by saying that TXT is my ult group and has been (on and off) for a few years. This is just an observation I’ve had on my mind for a while now and want to see what others think.
Now that Cortis has been around for about a year and BTS has been back with their cb, I think that it’s clear to see that these two groups have a specific sound that they’re going for that’s very heavily influenced by rap, hip hop, trap music, etc. Look at Hooligan, 2.0, Fashion, REDRED – all songs with a similar style that obviously doesn’t define either group’s sound but have been the trend for them lately.
Sandwiched in between them in order of debut date under BigHit is TXT, who (imo) has never made music that comes close to that sound except maybe recently with “So What”. But if you look at Stick with You, Beautiful Strangers, and Bed of Thorns, I think they follow the same tendency of TXT’s music to focus more on vocals than anything else. Of course the groups under a label don’t all need to sound the same, but when they’re all sandwiched together like this it’s difficult not to see the glaring differences in their music.
What I’m a bit torn about is whether or not this is a good thing for TXT with things like their popularity, longtime MOA loyalty, new listeners. My own personal two cents is that I’d be devastated if they ever did change their sound dramatically to match their labelmates. If they’re able to release music like Stick with You that takes advantage of the members’ vocals while still feeling like “old TXT but new” I think MOAs would like that (or at least I would), but it might not get them the popularity that songs like GO! and Hooligan have gotten.
I know every fan says this about their ult group so allow me to say it about mine, but one of the things I adore about TXT is that nobody does it like them. I’m not saying they’re better or worse than BTS and Cortis because I do like the other two groups as well. But as a MOA I would (selfishly) want TXT to stay TXT and keep sounding like TXT.
The day Kang Taehyun becomes a rapper is the day I know it’s coming 😩 /j
