Disclaimer: I don’t care if an idol doesn’t write or produce their own lyrics as those two factors are not an easy job to do which is why record labels hires professional songwriters and producers for the job. This post talks about how a lot of K-pop fans use the “artist” label to put down acts they don’t like and how they still use it even if these idols write their own music.
A few days ago, I had made a post asking commenters of what they consider is an artist after I had used the members of Blackpink as examples of writing their own music (solo wise) and yet are not being called artists despite their involvement both songwriting wise (four) and production wise (3/4). Some commenters had stated things like idols creating their own material and being involved in their work. Others had cited that idols are artists as to them singing and dancing is considered an art in their eyes due to the number of emotions idols convey when doing these things. There were a few who had pointed out the double standards of idols being shamed for not writing or producing their own songs compared to influential Western acts which had sparked a discussion of the expectations that idols are faced with especially when they are promoting outside of Asia. In my opinion, K-pop fans don’t take the “artist” label seriously and just use it to put down groups that doesn’t partake in their music compared to their groups in K-pop.
However, it becomes an interesting case of idols not being called “artists” even if they are involved in their music which had caused me to think that a lot of K-pop fans just see the “artist” label as a shield and don’t care if that idol is writing or producing their own music. Also, I think this is more than a hater issue, as there are casual nonfans who don’t consider the members of Blackpink as artists, but I think that has to do more with different expectations due to their status as a group. I think everyone has a right to a preference in a stanning an idol/group that they like and having their view on what an artist is as along you don’t put down idols for not participating in the creation of their songs and their fans for stanning these idols.
