I get the desire to use your favorite member as your icon, and I think that’s a personal choice (I won’t get into the portrait rights debate here). But if you’re going to post intense hate toward specific groups, or criticism that crosses into personal attacks wrapped in subjectivity, maybe don’t use your favorite member’s face to do it. That’s your opinion. It’s not theirs.
It makes me sad every time I see it. I know this isn’t unique to K-pop. But it happens at a frequency that’s hard to ignore.
And with so many genuinely wonderful groups and songs out there, there are so many people who just want to enjoy K-pop, and even more who could potentially get into it — which ultimately matters a lot for these artists — but they either stay away or end up leaving. I’m not saying you can’t express your opinions or your frustrations. But I do hope people can pause for a moment and ask themselves: is this actually supporting the group and the member you love so much?
With language barriers fading and content being shared globally more than ever, I really think we need to be a little more careful about this.
