First of all, I am not talking in regard to any specific survival show. In general, the fans don’t take it well when their fav contestant doesn’t make it to the final lineup. It is understandable to some point, but people go all the way to hate on the debut members. Like, they list out reasons on why their fav deserved the debut spot more than the debuted contestant. And it doesn’t sit right with me.
I do agree that most of the survival shows keep some kind of bias towards some contestants. Also, evil editing exists. But aside all that, all the survival shows have a vision on what they want in the final group. Like there maybe fixed concepts, the different positions they want in their group. So the producers may kind of see their vision on some contestants, so they will try to boost them.
The main excuse fans point out for hating on a debut member, for debuting, is always, their fav was a better dancer or vocalist. Yeah that may be true but if the need is for a centre why would the judges go for a strong vocalist who lacks centre presence. They will obviously go for a contestant that ticks all the points needed for a centre, who might not be a vocalist.
Let me portray an example for further clarification,
A group of 5 members is needed.
The members they already have go like this,
-
Main vocal, visual
-
Lead vocal, centre
-
Main dancer, lead rapper
-
Lead vocal, main rapper, visual
So the missing aspect of this group is a strong dance line. We need more dancers.
Options available –
A – Strong vocalist with good dancing skills
B – Strong dancer with average vocal skills
Who will you choose?
B would be the best choice for the role of the dancer.
I don’t know if I am over-explaining a non-existent issue. But the way some fans treat some members of survival show groups never fails to trigger me, so I wanted to let my thoughts out. I don’t really understand the, “she/he deserved that spot more than the debuted member.”, especially when the member fits in the group well than the eliminated person, who had better “skills”.
