Donkkaseu: A Korean Dish, Not Japanese Tonkatsu

I consider Korean-style pork cutlet (“donkkaseu,” not Japanese tonkatsu) to be Korean food.

Japanese tonkatsu is a Japanese adaptation of Western cuisine, while Korean donkkaseu is a Korean-style version that evolved from both Japanese and Western influences.

In fact, donkkaseu is one of the most common dishes in Korea. You can find it everywhere: snack bars, kimbap restaurants, donkkaseu specialty restaurants, taxi-driver restaurants, lunchbox shops, Japanese restaurants, and even Korean restaurants, often as a menu item for kids.

Korean donkkaseu has developed its own distinctly Korean style, which is why I consider it part of Korean cuisine. Unlike Japanese tonkatsu, the cutlet itself is usually thinner, and the sauce is typically sweeter and poured directly over the cutlet before serving. That alone makes the two dishes feel quite different.

However, many foreigners assume donkkaseu is simply Japanese food, so they often overlook Korea’s own pork cutlet culture.
