I began listening to kpop around 8 years ago and I mostly listen to girl groups. I can listen to anything released by a gg and if I like it ,it will be on my playlist . However for boy groups,I listen to very selective songs and mostly don’t really follow any groups and I was never a fan or got into a bg.
The irrational reason as to why I never got into kpop bgs is because the fans of bgs around me( in real life) are so weird about bgs in general. They thirst constantly over shirtless pics, wants to be married to said idols ,denies all dating rumours , cannot believe that such idols can be dating causally or you know ,behave like normal famous male idols(let’s be honest ,most men in other music genres sleep around or have multiple women). These are grown men by the way. They get shocked when said idol is smoking or drinking but then calm themselves down by saying “it their choice ” like as if these fans ever had a say over in their lives. Not only in real life but the vibe is seen in online discourses.
It’s obviously an irrational reason as we can’t blame all bg listeners like that. Not everyone is like that but I just feel the ick.It isn’t fair to blame nor generalize boy group listeners as all lovestruck girls but I listen to tons of other genres and I don’t see this problem with fans infantilizing male singers.I listen to lots of male singers in other genres.
It’s the same as dismissing taylor swift fans (her demographics is much larger )or justin Bieber for having 16 -year old fans girls as fans.Just because your fandom consists of younger girls doesn’t mean the artist isn’t worthy of discussions or respect. The same thing can be said for twice ,just because twice has a larger male fanbase compared to other groups ,that doesn’t mean their fans are consistently in love with them(They didn’t have much problems with dating either as I believe members had publicly revealed boyfriends throughout the years.)
I know kpop already has a bad reputation for having downright obsessive fans and annoying fans but I feel it is extremely different for boy groups compared to girl groups. The other things I noticed is album sales being so huge in bgs compared to ggs despite some of the girl groups consistently being more popular than some of the bgs and still having lower sales.
