I’ve seen a lot of discourse about this topic and one thing I’ve noticed is that fans really struggle to find balance, so we always end up in the extremes. It’s either infantilization or sexualization, and people treat them like “grown ahh man/woman”, to use their words.
I’m 18 myself, and when I see those kinds of comments, I can’t help but wonder how old these people actually are. Because honestly, at 18 we’re still far from being fully grown adults. I mean, even scientifically, the brain isn’t fully developed until around 25. I’m not saying that people at this age lack responsibility or maturity especially that it mostly depends on each person experiences. But in my opinion, 18 is still quite young. It’s a time when we’re discovering who we are, we still need guidance, we make mistakes or can be easily influenced. Being 18 mostly means being legally responsible, not necessarily mature in every sense.
I’m not saying that criticism isn’t allowed or that everything should be excused, but sometimes I find people judgments really harsh or infantilizing.
I just hope these young idols are well guided by the people around them, because it’s very easy to lose yourself, especially in this industry. I think that’s better than assuming things, judging everything they do, or treating them like babies who can’t make any decisions. Let’s just see them as young adults (or maybe even teens?) who are still growing and learning.
