Concerning future for k-pop? An AI Generated song is currently Top 10 in every major real-time Korean music chart.

There is an AI generated song called “The Adult I Dreamed Of” by a YouTuber called MEOMURU that is currently making waves in South Korea. MEOMURU himself seems to be a relatively new YouTuber with 20k subscribers whose content seems to consist mainly of AI generated songs and music videos.

“The Adult I Dreamed Of” seems to have somehow struck a chord with the Korean general public and it has been shooting up the charts despite being released by someone who is not a singer. MEOMURU freely admits to using AI generated vocals and melodies in his songs. In his channel description he straight up says he considers AI as “a modern instrument and creative partner”. As of 8 AM KST, this song has now reached the Top 10 of all 4 major Korean real-time music charts. (#2 on Bugs, #3 on FLO, #8 on Melon Top 100, #10 on Genie) It is also currently #3 on this week’s YouTube Music South Korea Weekly Chart.

I am aware that South Korea is much more accepting of AI usage than other countries, but where is the limit? It seems ridiculous to me that major Korean streaming services and music charts even allow AI generated songs like this on their platforms in the first place. Do they seriously consider someone who uses AI generated vocals and melodies to be an artist or songwriter? Does he receive royalties from a song that he didn’t really create himself? The fact that AI generated songs like this can become mainstream really worries me about the future of the Korean music industry and k-pop.
