If you think Kpop Twitter is toxic, stay away from Chinese social media (Rednote)

I would say over the last 2 years, I’ve seen a big increase in the amount of videos coming from Rednote that appear on Twitter now. I would say Rednote is sort of similar to Twitter as you can make post text, photos, or videos. And people leave comments and do a lot of discussion. Chinese fans are everywhere so they have a lot of kpop idol footage. My curiosity got the best of me so I decided to make an account and just look at some stuff on my fave groups. I was not prepared for what the Rednote algorithm would send my way. Fans complain so much and there’s a lot of toxicity that isn’t suppressed. On Twitter, fandoms would try to bury any drama and tell people to stop it but it thrives freely on Rednote.

Common stuff I’ve seen:

– Constant complaints that idols aren’t interacting as much on paid messaging sites or on free platforms like Weverse. And when they do, fans still nitpick saying they don’t like what they send. I saw fans complain an idol talked too much like a “friend” in their messages and just talked about whatever…

– Very open and hateful whenever their faves aren’t styled well or “not managing themselves well” and comments harshly on their appearances.

– Anything dating related cause bad meltdowns.

– Very critical of everything and criticizes the companies a lot. I see this on Twitter too but there’s always those people who try to shut down any negativity.

– So many solo fans that bash on the other members and even call them useless. Keep complaining about wanting more for their fave.

– Always threatening to leave the fandom and unstan as they’re bored and aren’t being entertained. But refuse to let go but keep complaining.

My takeaways are that many fans expect to be coddled and are highly demanding. They really care so much about their faves and are so obsessed that’s why they complain so much when things don’t go their way because that’s all they focus on. I think a lot of them are young too as seen lots of complaints about concerts happening around exam entrance times or busy school periods. Other stuff like saving all their money for their idols or even trying to sneak off to a concert in Seoul without their parents finding out.

I’m sure there’s plenty more that isn’t publicly seen (as that one Reddit user made a very extensive post on Chinese fans). If you’re one of those fans who think kpop should just be fun and hate any of the drama then definitely stay away from the Chinese platforms.
