This might be a long one but here goes. Recently, IVE caught a lot of flak online in Korea for their performance at Caribbean Bay water park. They were getting called out on all fronts, from their dancing to their lipsyncing. If you watch the full performance, you can just tell that they are just going through the motions and looking rather lackadaiscal. They’re not very much in sync, they don’t put much effort into the choreos most of the time, and most importantly not singing for the majority. The only times where you clearly hear their voices are when they are yelling at the crowd before the chorus, “1, 2 3 let’s go!” The comments in the fancam are all negative as well.
After related videos calling them out gathered millions of views, an article was released yesterday sourcing an insider from the event that they were singing on stage. In response to the article, another video has been going viral that’s calling out the insider saying that people aren’t dumb animals that can’t differentiate what’s live singing and what’s lipsyncing. The comments are unanimously in agreement that it looks blatantly obvious Wonyoung and the others are lipsyncing.
I can’t refute any of that. She was lipsyncing a large part of the set, and while she’s getting the bulk of the attention for this, it’s also true that other members weren’t singing as well. The only time a member’s voice was clearly heard during the song was during Liz’s high note in I Am. During the performance, there’s a part where Gaeul forgets her part while the AR is playing in the back. When she realizes her mistake and picks up her mic, she just lips her part without actually singing.
As you can tell from the performance, Yujin was sitting down for this performance due to her knee injury. She is the only member whose voice was loudly heard everytime her part came up. I think that’s why the difference seemed so stark because the rest of the members did not show up the same way. People in the comments were also praising Yujin for being a great professional and showing the most stage presence despite sitting down and just singing.
I’m a fan but I’m not afraid to admit that everyone calling them out is totally fair and correct. They are clearly not putting in their full effort and it shows. They don’t look emotive on stage, they’re dancing lightly because they don’t want their hair to be messed up, and they’re not delivering the live performances in front of a gathered crowd. Without Yujin dancing on stage with them, they look genuinely underwhelming as a group.
I’m kind of glad this has gone viral because I want things to change for the better for the group. This has always been in the back of my mind and I’ve seen many call them out even during their own concerts. Sometimes everyone needs a fire lit under their butts and I hope this is what prompts a positive change in the future.
