i was listening to red velvet’s chill kill album and was thinking about how every song on the album absolutely deserves its spot on the album on their own merit. each song builds the feeling of obsession and tragedy or of rebuilding hope after tragedy in a different way, and it all builds to make what’s in my opinion red velvet’s best concept album. every song stands on its own as a complete and outstanding track while also filling in different parts of what hope and tragedy mean to the group. what other albums are built to be so cohesive in your opinion? rec some :)!!
now my rant on how good chill kill is (all my interpretation, so i’m happy to discuss the album in the comments too for your interpretations!):
1- chill kill has such eerie/mystical synths and vocals before shifting into a bright vocal delivery that illustrates red velvet’s red and velvet concept perfectly. the switch up to a bright and upbeat song from such a dark beginning shows off the concept for this specific album too, which was hope and tragedy. the heavy bass and contrasting synths really make the song. the verses being grounded in deep electropop, bass, and kinda moody synths switching up into a pop dance chorus with brighter strings and energetic beats is perfect. it’s exactly a brightly tragic song.
2- knock knock who’s there sampling the nutcracker is still absolute genius. the strong strings with (again, my favorite) a super heavy bass line put the song in a dreamlike atmosphere, which suits the lyrics well. a song of this nature involving a childlike game of hide and seek is naturally creepy. the atmosphere pulls you in to this nightmarish game, which sets up the tug of war between the angel and devil, exploring temptation and falling deep into the unknown. very creepy, very good. the fairy bells with the darkness of this song is insane to listen to, it’s chilling but envelops you as you keep going. it’s almost dizzying.
3- underwater is so so sultry. the bass and synths are so heavy and warm and the vocal delivery is so fluid, you seriously feel like you’re drifting through water. the harmonies are layered so you feel submerged by the music. no wonder they’re sirens in this comeback, oh my god. they sound like one single voice at points, the layers are so tight. a song is about surrendering control and letting yourself be completely surrounded by deep distant water and love, but you feel totally enveloped by the end. speaking of the end, the silence takes you by surprise. you feel so involved and suffocated in it. the production is masterful. also, yes, it’s about sex.
4- will i ever see you again takes the listener by surprise after underwater. an immediate shift to faster paced synth pop feels like coming up from the deep end and taking a breath of cold air. the beat is electric, the synth riffs and strings are just delicious. it perfectly creates the feeling of loss and desire to meet again with a lost loved one after a hard goodbye, but the members also sound hopeful for the future. remembering the love from the lost relationship will help to move on, though they still feel desperate to reunite in the moment. the melody is upbeat, and the lyrics are despondent. a very velvet song.
5- nightmare is such a theater kid song. it’s eccentric, it’s retro, it’s pop. it’s dark pop, it’s r&b, it’s retro swing, and like very vaguely jazzy. the bass is plucky, the brass is all the way in your face, and the strings build so much suspense paired with the vocal delivery, which is playful and theatrical. the members sound smooth in comparison to how chaotic the instrumental is in the chorus. they’re stuck in the nightmare, but they try to convince themselves that the night will pass. while anxiety distorts happy memories, if you can remember your brightest moments the nightmare will disappear come morning.
6- iced coffee takes the mood from anxious and moody to a mid tempo r&b ballad. drinking coffee describes a relationship that is important to quit and totally addictive. even though the love is cold and chilly, the narrator craves it always. love dizzies the narrator and keeps her falling deeper and deeper into obsession. the piano is warm and inviting, the bass is subtle. the snare drum and shakers create a coffee shop ambiance. the song relies on very layered and full vocal harmonies that feel very comforting. it’s a sweet song until you look at the lyrics lol
7- one kiss is super energetic. an electronic dance song, the bass, synth, and massive exploding chorus are right up my alley. the vocals sound slightly urgent. the song talks about love so deep and powerful it creates a trance. with one kiss, they lock the listener to them forever. a sudden spark that turns a life entirely upside down, eliminating hesitation immediately. they dare the listener to escape the spell, but there’s no hope of leaving the narrator behind.
8- bulldozer goes straight into a hip-hop and trap song. distorted bass, heavy metallic percussion, high pitched piercing synths, and the the shift in the choruses to a softer approach speak to the song’s focus on breaking down emotional barriers and boundaries. the members are the toxic ones in this song. the synth warns their partner to run. the metallic clicks sound like destruction, it sounds like walls being totally demolished as you listen. the chorus switches tone to being celebratory over the destruction they’ve caused. after the trap beats fall away for the synth in the chorus, it feels like standing in the ruins of what they’ve aggressively taken down. what will they bulldoze and break? anything that gets in their way.
9- wings is gorgeous. starting off with the members brightly harmonizing a capella, the tone is immediately lighthearted and soaring. the piano, bells, and airy synths are beautiful. the vocals are soft over a bouncy tempo. to me it’s the most hopeful and sweet song on the album, comparing a person’s lifetime to a butterfly’s transformation and flight. telling the audience to spread their wings and soar into the bright open world, overcoming cold wind and past days of hiding and dark times. going through the hardship shaped them, but it is not the end of the story. no matter what nightmare comes, the sun will come again. a tomorrow is coming.
10- scenery is a minimalist r&b ballad, the strings are very pretty. the song is centered on the member’s vocal prowess, emphasizing emotional delivery and soft harmonies. it compares a relationship to watching the scenery and landscape change over time. even as time passes, the bond between the couple is preserved and kept safe. no matter what happens, their life together will go on.
every song has its purpose!! it’s such a perfect album.
