The last big 3 boy group to have major global success is Stray Kids, which means from April 2018 to now, none of the big 3 has debuted a globally successful new boy group. It’s like they’ve entirely ceded the market to HYBE. Worldwide, outside of Stray Kids, the top bgs are BTS, Seventeen, Enhypen, TXT, and Cortis. Even if you look at regionally-targeted groups, &TEAM are crushing the big 3’s Japanese bgs in Japan, and Santos Bravos has already accumulated about 30x as many streams as fellow “global” boy group dearalice.
All of the big 3 boy groups who debuted in the last eight years are pretty much non-players right now outside of East Asia, and even there, the groups are getting outmatched by fourth gen behemoths like Stray Kids, Enhypen, and TXT or recent fifth gen behemoth Cortis.
The girl groups have been much more competitive, with aespa, Babymonster, and Hearts2Hearts all holding their own or even leading the market. But when it comes to new boy groups, it’s like the big 3 just walked away and let HYBE eat their whole lunch buffet. The toughest non-Skz competition that HYBE has had in the last eight years came from Boys Planet and smaller companies like KQ and More Vision.
Why have the big 3 been struggling to put out competitive boy groups? It’s not like they haven’t tried different things: Treasure, Kickflip, RIIZE, and NCT Wish all look and sound very different from each other. What do they need to do to make their boy groups global players again?
