It is no secret that sometimes, K-pop groups are often set to different expectations depending on what record label that they had debuted under. In the case of acts under YG Entertainment, their image heavily lean on being cool and different while letting their main focus be on rapping, singing, and stage presence. However, when it comes to Blackpink and Babymonster, they are set to different expectations compared to their seniors and former label mates under YG Entertainment despite being acts signed to the company and debuting under them. For example, Bigbang lean into focusing on rapping, singing, and hyping up the crowd during their performances at their concerts and at award shows. Park Bom (member of 2NE1) had focused more on her vocal performance during her performances with 2NE1 instead of being dance focused in their performances as a group.
Even Bobby from IKON, who had debuted in the same generation as Blackpink, tends to focus on rapping than dancing in his performances with IKON. However, when it comes to Blackpink and Babymonster, the image of being a YG act is not applied to them. Blackpink’s dance performances are often labeled as “not being hard”, “lazy”, and “unsynchronized” by people watching them on stage. Not only that, but there have been posts, videos, and comments accusing their lyrics of being “misogynistic” when their seniors have songs like I Am The Best (2ne1, 2011), One Of A Kind (G-dragon, 2012), and Bang Bang Bang (Bigbang, 2015). The success of Babymonster is often dismissed due to them not being dominant on the domestic charts and not meeting the success of their seniors under YG Entertainment. Babymonster particularly Aehyeon was criticized for her less energetic performances after facing criticism of over dancing on stage leading me to believe that Blackpink and Babymonster are set to different expectations due to what their peers from other record labels are doing regarding their images, music, popularity, success, and performances on stage.
