This probably sounds like an odd question and very niche. But you know how so many K-Pop groups these days release high-budget performance videos that are basically music videos in themselves?
For example, “Blue Valentine” by NMIXX. I don’t hate the music video, but IMO the performance video is superior, and it’s definitely its own thing.
They’re dancing in a pretty detailed “trashed prom” set that you never see in the MV.
More vivid colours, masterful use of gel lights to convey the shifting temperatures when you fall in and out of love.
Some incredible imagery like Lily and Jiwoo being treated by a heart-shaped IV drip with blue liquid, etc. It’s really like a music video on its own.
But… which MVs are even better than their performance videos, in your opinion?
Again: must have a good performance video, but even better MV.
For me, it’s “Rebel Heart” by IVE. Colour grading, direction, set work, etc. are amazing in the performance video, but the MV takes it even further with the acting IMO.
The scene where the song gets softer in the bridge, with just the vocal and gentle piano, and Leeseo walks among the other schoolgirls and cries? Then it builds up to explosive pop-rock again in the final chorus??? CINEMA.
