I can’t believe I’m approaching 20 years… my younger self always wondered if I’d eventually grow out of kpop. There were years where I didn’t listen to it much, either because it didn’t interest me or because I wanted to explore my music taste outside of kpop, but as long as there’s music I like, I’ll keep listening. Nowadays aespa, Ateez, and TripleS keep me interested.
My favorite music years are 2009, 2010, 2016, and 2023. Least favorite year is 2014, not that the music was bad, but it was a dark year for the industry and Korea.
All-time favorite kpop song is Genie and has been since it dropped. I’m 100% biased but Genie is S-tier in every way – song, dance, concept, MV, outfits, performances, impact. No one can replicate its perfection. If I could relive any era in kpop, it’d be Genie.
Wonder Girls was my gateway and for a while they were my ult, so it was sad to see them go through long periods of inactivity until they fizzled into disbandment. I hope they’ll do future reunions 🥲 So Hot was my peak WG era.
Since Gee, SNSD has been my ult. That’s 17 years! And I don’t think that’ll ever change. SNSD was there with me through the worst and best times of my life. One of my most distinct memories is being 14 and waiting for oral surgery to be performed on terrified me. The surgeon’s assistant pulled up Spotify on the computer and gave me headphones so I could listen to music during the surgery to distract myself, so I shyly told her to play Girls’ Generation (back then it was NOT cool to like kpop). I think only three songs played from The Boys album before the surgery was over, but those three songs really helped calm me down.
When I look back on all my years as a sone, I only have good memories (ignoring the obvious). I might not keep up with them much anymore, but I really cherish the presence they’ve had in my life, and even when I’m 80 I’m gonna be breaking my hips to Gee 🩷 (I can’t wait for their 20th anniversary next year 😭)
