I am going to be honest, I have fallen into a T-ara rabbit hole the past week. Recently I was watching a video by Pop Chart Catalogue on youtube of their charting history, which basically is a video that shows how their songs charted on circle charts. Of course something that I instantly noticed was how their charting performance instantly changed drastically once the scandal started, which was literally less then 4 weeks after Day By Day was released. In recent years I would say Day By Day aged extremely well, it’s still pulling around 30K streams on spotify and it’s charting at an impressive #311 on melon charts 14 years after it’s release, which is higher then some of the most iconic hits of 2nd, 3rd gen and even 4th gen. Tho around the time it was released, of course the scandal affected it’s performed drastically.
The song started to fall rapidly off the charts, charting a total of 14 weeks. While it was able to achieve a total of over 2.1M downloads, compare to Lovey Dovey downloads there was a 1.6M drop in downloads. Only 2 months after T-ara came back again with Sexy Love which peaked at number 4. While it’s still an extremely high debut and charted for 15 weeks, for a group that was at T-ara’s level at the time it was low. The track achieved 1.5M downloads, which was once again a drop of 600K downloads compared to Day By Day in just 2 months. Over a year after Sexy Love, t-ara would make another comeback with number 9 which reached a peak of 5 and achieved 500K downloads.
As we see the scandal literally killed their career rapidly. Of course this makes me question how Day By Day, Sexy Love, and Number 9 would hard performed if it wasn’t for the scandal. Day By Day started extremely strong on charts, because of the initial performance before the controversy it was able to achieve an impressive #19 on circle year end charts with just 4 months of tracking, but it rapidly fell. Number 9 aswell, if it was still able to enter the top 5 despite a year hiatus and the controversy it makes me literally wonder how well it would had performed if the scandal never happened. So, how do you guys think the 3 tracks would had performed if the scandal never happened?
