when “problematic” becomes a fandom weapon

I’ve been thinking about how K-pop fandoms handle “problematic” behavior, and I feel like there are two very different things that often get mixed up into one conversation.

On one hand, I absolutely think idols should be held accountable when they do something genuinely harmful, insensitive, or worth criticizing. Being famous shouldn’t put someone above criticism, and “they probably didn’t know” isn’t automatically a defense for everything.

That said, I’ve also noticed how quickly these incidents become fanwar ammunition.

An idol does something questionable, suddenly someone digs up an old clip of another group’s member doing something similar. If someone criticizes an idol’s behavior? “Well YOUR fave did XYZ thing in 2019.” Then someone will try to ”defend” that other idol by making up some misinformation.

Someone brings up a legitimate issue involving their own fave? Suddenly the entire conversation becomes a courtroom exhibit featuring five other groups who also did it but didn’t get called out.

Can we please stop doing this? At least on Reddit kpop community.

At that point, the discussion isn’t really about accountability anymore. It’s like finding enough dirt on someone other idol to deflect from the problem at hand. And I think that’s where things become particularly frustrating. You simply can’t have normal and balanced discussions anymore.

And honestly, at this point, almost every K-pop group or idol has had at least one weird, questionable, insensitive, or just plain stupid moment. That’s not particularly unique to K-pop either. If the standard is “has this celebrity ever behaved weirdly or done something questionable?”, then congratulations, you’ve eliminated 99% of the industry. The constant “gotcha” culture becomes exhausting. If you dig through enough years of content from virtually any idol, you’re probably going to find something you can use against them.

Which is also why I think fandoms need to be careful about treating “my fave has never done anything wrong” as some kind of badge of superiority. You can like an idol while acknowledging that they’re imperfect

I think I just want to say that we can acknowledge that our favorite idol did something wrong without needing another idol to be equally or more wrong. Two people can behave badly. One person’s actions don’t erase another person’s actions.

We can also criticize an idol without turning it into a generalization that their entire group is horrible. And we can defend an idol when someone exaggerates the accusations without pretending they have never ever made that mistake.

I also think we need to get better at distinguishing between:

something genuinely harmful/problematic vs

something ignorant or insensitive that deserves criticism vs

something immature or stupid vs

something we personally dislike vs

and something that is genuinely ambiguous and doesn’t give us enough information to confidently judge someone’s intentions

All of these things lie on a spectrum and aren’t all the same thing. I find that sometimes people end up escalating minor incidents into moral scandals, for insidious reasons while fans will downplay some genuine problematic behavior.

I’d hope fandoms can become better at criticism.

Hold people accountable when it’s warranted. Give context when context matters. Correct misinformation. Please DON’T invent stuff. And apply roughly the same standard to your own favorite that you’d apply to someone else’s.
