Regarding Le Sserafim’s recent prerecorded vocals controversy

I know prerecorded vocals have become increasingly more common in K-pop to the point where it’s happening even during artists’ own concerts. I’ve personally been to shows where groups were clearly relying on them, and once you notice it, there’s nothing more disappointing. When you’re paying to see an artist live at their concert, a big part of what you’re paying for is hearing them perform in the room with you.

There’s also a pretty important distinction between a loud backtrack and prerecorded vocals. Fans are STILL confusing the two to this day. A backtrack can support the members while they’re actually singing, which is completely understandable. Backtrack in itself can become problematic when it’s mixed so loudly that you can barely hear their real voices, but that’s still fundamentally different from prerecorded vocals. When prerecorded vocals are doing the actual work, you’re no longer just supporting the live performance. You’re essentially passing a recording off as something that’s happening live in front of the audience, which is at its core, misleading the people who paid to see an actual live performance. It’s nothing more than a scam tactic and there’s nothing one can say to defend it.

Just because prerecorded vocals are becoming more and more widespread doesn’t mean we should just accept them. The whole “hear how imperfect this sounds? You can tell I’m singing live” illusion when those imperfections were already baked into the prerecorded recording is just so wrong… Simulating authenticity should NEVER be the answer or become common practice.

I just wish the industry were more comfortable with letting artists sound like actual people performing live, imperfections. And fans should be more accepting of those imperfections.
At the same time, artists SHOULD still be able to sing the songs they actually released in a live setting, minus certain adlibs or BGVs where necessary. If they’re completely incapable of doing that, then I think it points to a certain level of unprofessionalism and lack of preparation.

The more we become desensitized to lipsyncing and Live AR, the more we risk losing what makes live concerts so special in the first place.
