How did Koreans avoided being incorporated into China for the last thousand years?

I find it fascinating that Koreans weren’t absorbed by the Chinese as one of them. Obviously, Koreans are a different ethnic group from the Han Chinese, but still, some other ethnolinguistic groups such as the Manchus and Mongols were assimilated and incorporated by various Chinese governments as one of them, and are now Chinese citizens. But Korea remained as a distinct nation throughout the ages, and China was unsuccessful in incorporating it as part of their own territory.
