Dr. Luke keeps coming up as a controversial figure whenever he works with K-pop artists. Setting aside the fact that he’s still actively working not only in K-pop but across the Western music industry as well, can someone explain exactly what the controversy is?
From what I’ve found, he was never criminally charged, and the civil lawsuit ended in a settlement between the parties. Since then, both sides have continued to stand by their own versions of what happened, but as outsiders, there’s no way for us to independently verify who’s telling the truth. Some celebrities have publicly taken one side or the other, but they’re still outsiders to the actual events, just like the rest of us.
So that leaves a different question. Is there any objectively verifiable evidence that shows he did something that was clearly unethical and deserving of public backlash, regardless of the legal outcome? The only thing I’ve found that seems clearly deserving of criticism is that he made comments about Kesha’s appearance. That’s definitely something people can criticize, but realistically, I don’t think the K-pop industry would cancel someone over that.
If I’m missing something or leaving out an important piece of context, I’d appreciate it if someone could fill me in. So far, I haven’t found any objective, independently verifiable evidence that would justify someone being effectively blacklisted or pushed out of the industry.
