tl;dr: lesserafim’s music, lyrics, and tour arrangements come together to tell a story about their experiences, thoughts, and feelings in a way that makes their performances feel so much more personal and meaningful. it’s not just about stage quality, but the message behind each performance and how genuinely it connects with both the girls and their audience. i wish more k-pop companies let their artists express themselves like this.
also, this is lowkey bordering on glazing lesserafim, but i’ve been holding this thought in for way too long and i NEED to get it out lol.
i’m not sure if people realize how much lyrics and messages play a role in performances in general. i end up thinking a lot about lesserafim when it comes to this. their whole concept revolves around themselves, their thoughts and feelings, and their personal experiences, and it translates into their music a lot more than people give them credit for.
seeing the development of concepts like ambition and how their approach to it changed throughout their songs, from the perception of it in fire in the belly, to the climax in smart, and then the outcome in irony, is literally storytelling. but what catches my attention the most is how genuine it all feels to them. born fire, hot, and ash form a whole cycle about passion and resilience, and there’s something so genuine about capturing emotions like these in this way, because i feel like that too.
their performances are always so good because you can tell how much these songs mean to them. i don’t think i’ve seen a k-pop girl group bring out something quite like this in recent years. it’s beautiful to see how they’ll put songs together for their tour setlists, what messages they’ll create through the song sequences they come up with, and what emotions they’re aiming to bring out in their audience.
i’ve never particularly been someone who cared about lyrics and meaning, and i still fully believe that not every song needs deep meaning or impactful lyrics. some songs are just meant to be bops, and they serve their purpose just right. but seeing songs like need your company (“how i feel about you”), sonder (“oh, you’re your own person too, with your own struggles like my own”), and trust exercise (“that’s what you feel about me”) being put together to talk about human relationships and yunjin’s own experiences breaks me so much.
it makes me realize that this puts their performances, and their tours, on a whole different level from what their peers are doing. not because of stage quality or whatever, but because of the sheer message and purpose behind each performance.
rearranging songs so they blend into each other was definitely one of the best things they’ve done, and i hope they never get tired of it. i know a lot of people hate it and mourn the original instrumentals, but you can listen to those on spotify whenever you want. the rearrangements are unique and serving a purpose, building up a whole story.
no wonder people come away from their concerts showering their performances with praise. those girls are getting on stage to share a part of their thoughts and feelings, to show you their vulnerabilities, and as the songs resonate with them, they resonate with the audience too.
i wish k-pop companies would let their artists sing and write more about what they want. this type of connection to what they’re performing is what makes the whole thing enjoyable to begin with.
