Just being “pretty good” at a second language is still very impressive & it’s okay if your fave is not truly fluent

This is more of an observation than anything but I feel like a lot of fans will say that their faves are fluent in a second language when they’re probably closer to conversational than anything. True fluency in a language is an ability to have any conversation on any subject with ease, and just because idols are able to handle short interview questions in another language doesn’t mean they’ve reached that level.

I don’t mean this as shade or criticism to the idols AT ALL. I am also working really hard on improving my second language right now and I know first hand that language learning is difficult and just getting to a conversational level requires learning so much vocabulary and so many grammatical rules. I think idols who use their limited free time to take on that challenge deserve soooo much credit regardless of their skill level.

I feel like fans want to bestow the label of “fluent in x language” on their faves because they feel like true fluency is the only level of language learning that is impressive, but just getting to a fairly proficient level in a new language still requires a lot of work and is still an accomplishment that I think these idols deserve credit for!
