Why do extremely popular idols sometimes become polarizing, even within their own fandoms?

Hello everyone, I’m relatively new to kpop, ARMY specifically, and have been catching up on BlackPink and moreso BTS content over the past few months, and I’ve honestly become obsessed of them. My bias is Taehyung. The first thing that initially caught my attention back in 2016 was his visuals after watching Blood Sweat & Tears (I wasn’t ARMY at the time). More recently though, I’ve connected with him on a deeper level, his voice, his goofy personality, his relationships with the members, and his emotional and vulnerable side, among many other things. Because of that, I was a bit surprised to come across quite a bit of criticism or negativity toward him, sometimes even from within the fandom.

So I wanted to ask: for those who’ve been around longer or followed things more closely, is this something common? Do kpop idols all face this kind of controversy as a result of their popularity? I’m genuinely asking to understand better. Thanks in advance.
