I see this kind of behavior in other fandoms too, but I’ve noticed it’s especially common among some Eyekons (Katseye fans) and even casual listeners. A lot of people leave comments under other girl group videos or performances saying things like “I got too used to Katseye,” as if that justifies putting down other artists. I’m an Eyekon myself and a fan of a few different K-pop groups, and I’ll admit I do glaze my faves sometimes. It is an essential part of stanning cult, honestly. But what I don’t like is when that turns into comparing or belittling other groups. Just the other day I saw someone say that Le Sserafim’s energy was “boring” because they were “used to Katseye,” which made no sense it was literally a clip from their concert, a full two-hour show. No one is going to be going all out for that long 😭. Then there are people who constantly talk about how idols are “jealous” of Yoonchae because she supposedly has more freedom, which just feels so cringy 🥀. Like, let’s not act like the Western music industry isn’t just as (if not more) exploitative. Did y’all forget about Britney Spears or Ke$ha? Some fans talk as if Katseye is completely above or “superior” to K-pop when, realistically, they do almost everything a K-pop group does: the training, the performance-heavy concepts, the group dynamics, the marketing. And ironically, Katseye became popular for many of the same things people criticize K-pop for, like relying heavily on performances (which is how “Gnarly” blew up) or building parasocial connections through relatability. Personally I think Katseye is super amazing and talented but people have got to stop acting like they invented stage presence and are the only people who have it lol.
