I’m going to be honest and say that I really don’t follow anything online about kpop. I have my groups that I like, I watch their online content, listen to their music, and just generally ignore fandom spaces. I don’t have an instagram account or an X account. I check the kpop related subreddits once in a while when my groups put out new music.
I found out about UNCHILD because STAYC is one of my ult groups so I’m pretty up to date on anything involving High Up Entertainment. I have given zero thought to the name. In my experience kpop groups just have weird names. Stars to a Young Culture, Xdinary Heroes, Purple Kiss, Stray Kids, Mamamoo, BABYMONSTER, New Jeans, Kep1er, etc.
So I come online after UNCHILD’s debut to look at stuff and everyone is saying how much they hate the name? It makes them think of tiktok language for abortion? I’m also older so I don’t really do tiktok language so I have no idea if that’s accurate or not. It was just so surprising to me because all I said to myself was ‘huh interesting’.
So what do you think? Do you think people are blowing it out of proportion? I know I’m probably very far on the other end of the spectrum about not caring at all what a group is named and giving no thought to it, but surely it isn’t that bad right?
What other groups can you think of that have an awkward or weird name?
