TIL jailed ex-president lee myung bak turned Korea’s spy agency into a taxpayer funded troll farm, birthing ilbe, conspiracy clowns, and a generation of raging woman haters

lee myung bak’s government basically kickstarted Korea’s whole right-wing internet machine. Back when he was president, the National Intelligence Service and even the military’s Cyber Command were caught running fake online accounts to push pro-government propaganda and attack liberals. They flooded forums, news comments, and social media with posts supporting lee and the conservative party while calling anyone critical of the government a “commie” or “leftist.” It wasn’t some small rogue team either. It was a coordinated state operation meant to control online opinion during elections and protests. Basically wasting taxpayer money to argue with strangers online

When all that got exposed after he left office, it turned out the operation had been running for years, starting under his administration and peaking around the 2012 election. Even though 2mb or “2 megabytes of brainpower lee” himself wasn’t charged for the troll farms, most of the people involved were his subordinates or intelligence officials following his government’s line. Years of manipulation, election meddling, and fake “public opinion” turned online spaces toxic. When the state troll army got caught, regular trolls just took over

After the government ops got shut down, the same energy moved into civilian spaces like DC inside’s ilbe board. That’s where the tone got nastier and more misogynistic. The whole “fight the left, mock feminists, defend the nation” mindset came straight out of the old propaganda playbook. His administration taught the internet that being a conservative meant being loud, bitter, and paranoid online. lee myung bak didn’t invent ilbe, but his administration’s manipulation and internet control policies pretty much set the stage for it to exist

He also built that cheonggyecheon stream thing, his big vanity project, so people would forget he was a corrupt businessman pretending to be an environmentalist
