Korea produces some of the best movies in the world, and unsurprisingly I am a big fan of Ma Dong-Seok and his movies. I joke with my husband that if you ever encounter him in a movie world, you are either very lucky (because he’s playing a super tough cop or hero who gets justice done) or you’re in a world of hurt (because he’s playing a gangster or thug). We then realized that often he is a cop being a bad guy, or a gangster being a good guy, etc.
We settled on the four faces of Ma Dong-Seok:
- A good good guy (honorable cop, etc.), e.g. Champion
- A bad good guy (cop who is corrupt).
- A bad bad guy (ruthless crime boss etc.): Deep Trap
- A good bad guy (criminal working to bring an even worse criminal to justice): The Gangster the Cop and the Devil
The one category I couldn’t find a good example for is “bad good guy” – someone who is supposed to be on the side of good but is really evil. Yeah, some of his movies feature him being a vigilante cop doing things that would totally be illegal, but that is so common in movies around the world it’s not worth noting… American movies have so many examples of this.
