Why is “bastard” a common insult in Korean media that has been translated?

I’ve noticed that in tons of translated Korean media, written or otherwise, “bastard” is a common insult when translated to English. Yet, growing up in country that speaks mostly English, I’ve never really heard “bastard” as a genuine insult to use towards others.

Is growing up with unmarried parents a really big deal in Korea? Why is bastard the go-to?
