What’s the point of pre-releases/singles in kpop?

Maybe I’m being ignorant but I never understood the point of pre-releases/singles in kpop. In my opinion, it just affects groups negatively because it ruins the momentum. Kpop companies should put all of their money and energy promoting the actual album release.

Sometimes I listen to a groups pre-release (as a casual listener) and when I find out that it’s a single, rather than feeling intrigued for the whole album I just feel disappointed and forget to listen to it when it actually gets released.

In some cases, singles overshadow the actual title track or bsides and it’s so frustrating to see.
