Some of you might know this already, but Itzy released debate content on this exact question a few weeks ago and the clips went quite viral in Korea.
Ryujin’s argument for perseverance:
Star quality definitely matters. But you can develop it to some extent through experience and training. If you have no perseverance, however, you won’t be able to survive an idol’s brutal schedule, and your career could be cut short while you’re still a trainee. That’s why I think the most important quality to have as an idol is perseverance.
Chaeryeong’s argument for star quality:
Star quality is the most important quality to have as an idol. Most people in society have a decent amount of perseverance. They go to school every day. They go to work every day. Why? Because making money requires hard work. But why do we like idols? Because they’re somewhat different from ordinary people. They draw you in. They have this sparkle. That’s why star quality is so important.
Yuna’s argument for star quality:
I think being an idol means having the power to make people feel good. I also think it’s a job that brings people happiness. But if you have perseverance without star quality, you might not even enjoy performing. And if you’re not happy yourself, how can you share that happiness with others? That’s why I think star quality is a prerequisite.
Lia’s argument for perseverance:
If you look at being an idol simply as a job, even if you become a trainee because of your star quality, you still can’t debut without perseverance. Of course, star quality is a huge part of it. But we’re talking about prerequisites, not what makes someone more successful. So I’m choosing perseverance.
Yeji’s argument for star quality:
These days, plenty of idols debut after a short training period because they have that star quality. If you want to have the kind of charm that draws more people in, I think star quality matters much more.
All the girls raised some really great points! Of course, if we’re looking at this with more nuance, the most sensible answer would be that both are necessary. But for the sake of the debate, we’re choosing between perseverance and star quality as the more important prerequisite for becoming an idol.
Which one do you think is more important to have as an idol?
