I hope this is the right subreddit for this post but I was wondering what your thoughts are on AI being so intertwined with the music industry.
Earlier, I saw someone create a whole song from start to finish in like 10 minutes using AI!!! Lyrics, voice, beats, and everything!! And that made me wonder if such a thing should be allowed.
I understand that AI is useful in many ways and I also use it so I’m not trying to judge or bring down others for doing the same but it makes me wonder where we draw the line when it comes to using AI.
Seeing that person create the song with AI made me feel scared of technology. As a carat, I’m sure carats and even other fandoms can relate to when the whole seventeen and AI fiasco happened last year, we were all defensive and rightfully angry that their hard work was discredited as a result of AI. But our anger can’t compare to that of the group who poured their all into their music only to be disrespected in such a way.
I know making music is hard and isn’t for everybody and the standards are even higher for ‘good’ music, so when I heard that AI-generated song today, it felt wrong and in a way it made me feel more sorry for seventeen. Comparing their music to something AI-generated is so disrespectful but I’ll save that for another post.
Art shouldn’t be replaced or recreated by technology because what happens to the people who poured their all into their work? People who spent years learning and perfecting their art? Producing isn’t easy, it takes a long time to create a piece of satisfactory and great music so what happens to all those people when a random Joe from down the street who hasn’t even touched a guitar before decides to create “Music” using AI and gets something in less than an hour?
I’ve seen the same thing happen to artists and painters and it doesn’t sit right with me.
I know the quality of music made by humans and that made by technology is vastly different but with the way AI is advancing, I’m unsure of what to say.
I also have issues with creating lyrics with AI. Songs are something that people are supposed to connect to, something we’re supposed to FEEL and RELATE to but how can we relate to words written by a machine? What is the feeling in that? Where is the art in that?
I don’t know about you but the moment I know the lyrics of a song were written by AI, I can no longer connect to it. It will feel like there’s a brick wall between the song and me.
Lyrics don’t have to be perfect, a song doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be HUMAN. But by using AI, we have lost the touch of humanity in music.
I know it’s still humans who put in the prompt to generate lyrics, but it’s not the same as the words coming out of a person’s head, or words stemming from personal experience and encounters. There are no emotions in machine-generated lyrics.
You can try to convince me otherwise but I’ll say this, machines don’t feel what they have written. They write based on what they think humans will feel if they read it. They analyze people, analyze other songs, and then write based on that to try and duplicate human feelings and emotions.
As good as a fake might be, it doesn’t compare to the original.
What do you think about AI being so tightly tied to music and other forms of art and what effects do you think it will have on the industry as a whole with the way things are going? I’d like to hear your thoughts.
