the state of kpop regarding music quality

this isn’t going to be a post about the “westernization” of kpop because i think that it’s a tired, overdone and all-around bogus take that’s the effect of people not being educated about pre-gen 3 kpop.

i’m pretty sure everybody by now has noticed the decline in quality of kpop songs which isn’t a topic that’s a stranger to this sub. from the disappearing bridges, lack of harmonization and the popularization of all-rounder groups, is it really hard to pinpoint the main cause? tiktok has caused irreversible damage to the music industry in general. songs these days are made to be played in the back of a tiktok video then are immediately forgotten once the trend is over.

i’ve been listening to 2nd gen kpop more than ever to the point where i’m watching music show performances from that time and variety show episodes because i don’t get the same rush and satisfaction from the current generation neither the previous one. there aren’t many 4th & 5th gen songs that have high replay value and i don’t think i’ll feel as much nostalgia for both like i do with 2nd and 3rd gen.

kpop songs from 4th gen to now sound so… thin veiled? there are barely any hard-hitting vocals and you can barely pinpoint the main vocal of a group these days. also, the instrumental is either so loud that it drowns out the vocals or the vocals are just incredibly soft and breathy so you can barely hear them. apparently kara were known as terrible singers but i watched their performances and they sound perfectly fine??! and how can a goofy as song like ring ding dong have such amazing vocals to carry it? the autotune doesn’t even modify the members’ vocals too much.

i’m curious. how many representative songs can you even name from 4th gen compared to 2nd and 3rd?
