Seoul Metropolitan Government (Published: July 8, 2026)
With the recent sharp rise in lease (jeonse) and monthly rent prices in Seoul worsening the financial burden on families raising children, the Seoul Metropolitan Government is rolling out aggressive support measures to assist non-homeowning families with newborns. The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that applications for the second half of 2026 for the “Housing Expense Support Program for Non-Homeowning Families with Newborns”—designed to assist the residential stability of non-homeowning families who have recently had a child—opened on July 1. Overview of the Support Program
Up to 7.2 Million KRW over 2 Years… Extending up to 4 Years Upon Having More ChildrenThis program covers both monthly rent payments and interest on jeonse loans. Once selected as a beneficiary, you can receive up to 300,000 KRW per month based on your actual housing expenses for two years (totaling up to 7.2 million KRW). This is expected to significantly reduce monthly fixed housing burdens. The funds will be paid retroactively in four installments every six months. Furthermore, to boost childbirth incentive effects, the extension benefits are exceptionally generous. If a beneficiary family has an additional child during or after the support period, the support duration is extended by 1 year per child, up to a maximum of 4 years.
Lowered Threshold Eases Financial Stress for Raising Children in SeoulStarting this year, the Seoul Metropolitan Government raised the realistic cap on eligible jeonse deposits from 300 million KRW to 500 million KRW (and monthly rent to 2.29 million KRW or less), greatly expanding the range of eligible households. As a result, the number of applicants in the first half of this year alone reached 1,754 households—a massive 88% surge compared to the total number of applicants for the entire previous year (935 households). An analysis of first-half applicants showed that monthly rent households made up the largest share at 48%. Among them, 74% were paying high monthly rents of over 600,000 KRW, proving that this policy is actively contributing to relieving actual household housing costs. Detailed Eligibility Checklist: Can My Family Apply?Applications for the second half of the year run until December 31, 2026, and are limited to households within 1 year of childbirth. In particular, families who gave birth between July 1 and December 31, 2025, must be careful not to miss their individual application deadlines.
※ Note: Residents of public rental housing or those receiving other housing support benefits (such as the Newborn Special Loan, or Seoul’s Jeonse Deposit Interest Support) are excluded from this program. ※ Note: Families who gave birth between July 1, 2025, and December 31, 2025, must verify that they apply within the ‘1 year after childbirth’ window to ensure they do not miss their eligibility period. Example Scenario: What if it is a “half-jeonse” (deposit + monthly rent) of “305 million KRW deposit and 900,000 KRW rent”?Yes, this household qualifies. Calculating the monthly rent conversion value of the 305 million KRW deposit (approx. 1.39 million KRW) and adding the actual monthly rent of 900,000 KRW equals exactly 2.29 million KRW, meaning it meets the eligibility criteria.
Online Application… First Payout in February Next YearEligible families can apply online via the “All-in-One Childbirth and Childrearing Information Portal” (탄생육아 몽땅정보통) website. The required documents for submission include:
Applicants in the second half of the year will undergo qualifications screening, with results scheduled to be announced in January 2027. Upon verification of documents, the housing allowance payments will begin in February 2027. submitted by /u/rdh2dmd |
