Melon just launched the Global-K Chart: Here’s the first ever ranking

Melon’s charts have traditionally been focused solely on domestic performance, but the platform has now introduced a new chart called the Global-K Chart just a few hours ago.

According to Melon, the Global-K Chart measures the global impact of K-pop artists using data from three major music platforms across Korea, China, and Japan: Melon (Korea), Tencent Music Entertainment (China), and LINE MUSIC (Japan).

How it’s counted:
Scores are calculated by combining streaming performance and fan activity metrics from each platform. The specific metrics used may vary depending on each service’s environment and platform characteristics.

Ranking basis:
Usage data from the previous 24 hours.

Update schedule:
Daily at 12:00 AM (KST).

To summarize, Melon has partnered with Tencent Music Entertainment and LINE MUSIC to launch a chart that reflects K-pop performance across the three largest music markets in East Asia (Korea, Japan, and China). Here’s the first ever Global-K Chart ranking:

I feel like I have to clarify before people start writing comments and being all confused. The numbers you see here under the platform columns only represent their overall ranking based on the algorithm in effect. They are not a reflection of how an artist’s latest release is charting on those individual platforms. Rather, they’re an amalgamation of various factors.

For example, when you look at aespa’s Melon rank here at #1, don’t go questioning why is I.O.I at #2 when they’re currently topping the Melon chart and LEMONADE is only #29 on the daily chart? As I mentioned, these rankings are based on a combination of several factors and multiple songs across an artist’s catalog, not just the artist’s performance of their single best-charting track on the chart.

Lastly, please don’t just add up the ranks and divide them by three and say things don’t make sense. These calculations are never that simple. I don’t know the exact formula or variables at play, and you don’t either.
