Mapping K-pop girl groups as NBA teams, version 2.

Blackpink = Boston Celtics

Still defined by massive success, the benchmark and the standard. Blackpink set new records like the Celtics collect banners. JenLisa are the Jays.

Twice = Golden State Warriors

Led by baby-faced franchise players Nayeon and Stephen Curry, they are team-centric groups who emphasize collective impact (Nine or none, Strength in Numbers). Following a dominant run from 2016 to 2019, both have transitioned into respected veterans who still deliver excellence.

Red Velvet = Milwaukee Bucks

Both have entered their twilight eras after dominating the previous decade. The releases of Red Flavor, Bad Boy, and Zimzalabim were like the Bucks’ leap into contention, while Psycho and the 2021 Bucks championship served as their validating magnum opuses. Giannis is Seulgi, as both are the foundational workhorses who showcase their all-rounded talent.

LE SSERAFIM = Minnesota Timberwolves

Yes, I know their de facto partnership with the Lakers. But the group dynamics scream Minnesota. Sakura as Conley, Chaewon as Ant, Kazuha as McDaniels, Yunjin as Randle/Gobert, Eunchae as Naz Reid/Dosunmu.

IVE = Philadelphia 76ers

Both revolve around a super-polarizer who lives under a microscope (Wonyoung/Embiid) and a well-beloved engine (Yujin/Maxey) who are seen as warm, approachable, and enthusiastic – the heartbeat of the team.

Starship and Philadelphia share a position just outside the traditional big-time structures (YG/JYP/SM/HYBE for Starship, and LA/Boston/Golden State/New York for Philadelphia).

Both routinely criticized for the “gulf” between their superstar duo and the rest of the roster. Like the 76ers’ early playoff exits, IVE lags behind aespa and LE SSERAFIM outside South Korea (their regular season).

ITZY = Phoenix Suns

Sneakers era and Game 7 vs Dallas swung their momentums downward within a few months of each other in 2022.

Babymonster = OKC Thunder

I believe Ahyeon is the Cade Cunningham of KPOP, but as a whole, Baemon are like the Thunder – young, talented roster for the long haul. Scary depth, and not even injuries or hiatuses can stop their dominance.

aespa = Denver Nuggets

Karina is Nikola Jokic, the highly-respected force multipler who makes everyone better. They’re also dorky off-stage (stupid cheese cat and Jokic’s horses).

Both are teams of elite players who know and deliver their roles well. aespa’s 2024 elite run (Drama-Supernova-Armageddon-Whiplash) is similar to the Nuggets’ 2023 championship run.

NewJeans = Memphis Grizzlies

The ultimate what if. They were the future before 2024.

(G)I-DLE = Miami Heat

Culture queens and kings, it’s their identity.

ILLIT = San Antonio Spurs

Wonhee and Wembanyama led their respective groups to huge leaps in popularity and performance. Neither are “cute” anymore, they’re now ready to prove themselves and their newfound maturity.
