It was already started by Goat JYPapi who had dream that Kpop Girl Groups can succeed in West and Wonder Girls toured US in 2010, One year before that they opened for Jonas brothers tour also.
Tour was a moderate sucess I would say it just that other promotions and bad descisions cost them alot eventually leading to JYPE on bankruptcy state in 2013-14.
This spooked other agencies like SM and YG, YG actually had done 2 shows in 2NE1 tour in 2012 but that’s the only time 2NE1 ever toured in West. SNSD never even tried it despite having English speaking members. Agencies focused on Japan mostly with Japanese tours and some girl groups eventually holding concert in Tokyo Dome like Kara and SNSD.
Then for fun fact 4Minute was actually first K-pop girl group to hold solo concert in Europe, It wasn’t a tour though more of a Fanmeet. Same thing Apink tried in US in 2016 US tour.
Still no big agency wanted to tour West yet fearing outcome will be losses, so their focus still remained on Asia. Big 3 of 3rd gen (BP, Twice and RV) mostly focused there. For reference Twice’s first world tour only had 7 shows in 3 countries (5 in SK, 1 in Thailand and 1 in Singapore), 4 if you consider their Japanese showcase your as your extension as some do. They eventually grew but Japan was still there.
Especially BP with Japan Arena Tour and Twice with Both Arena and then Dome tour in Japan back to back.
Then in 2019 all three RV, BP and Twice thought it’s time to tour West and all three toured in US that year which started this expansion. Actually Dreamcatcher had some success in their 2018 tour and still succeed next few years but these three touring in one year was a shifting point. As agencies saw how much profitable it can be.
Then when Covid hit Kpop popularity grew even more and when Concert were allowed again BP and Twice were ready. They swept the West touring scene all together even more dominating than BGs except BTS. This two group pioneer that Kpop GG tours can be, Twice become First to Sold stadium in NA and BP first to sold in Europe.
The flood gates opened by this we seen every new groups touring west in their 2-3 year now. All 4th gen groups have toured West now and even smaller agencies started to tour in west. Groups like Mamamoo, StayC, Purple Kiss, Loona, Everglow and so on.
Currently 4th girl groups are trying their hardest to expand in West by touring because it’s make more money and also creates new fans. So far among them none of succeed in Stadium shows in west.
It would be still a sucess if they were able to sell out few shows in west. LSF had huge success in their previous tour, while Aespa and IVE doing good so far. Nmixx recently completed their tour and I would say great for first tour in West.
As for 5th gen it’s still new, and except BM nobody has tour in West I think.
Still the main question I heard from other fans is that Is Kpop GG touring peaked with Twice and BP in 3rd gen? Will we ever see groups like these two?
I used to think New jeans might have done it now I don’t even know. What do think?
