I know it’s pretty early, but from the content they have released so far, and they way SSE is promoting them, I would say they are one of, if not the most 2nd gen coded girl groups recently, and as a Kpop fan since 2009, I’m so here for it.
Few things that caught my attention:
– The pretty random drop of I DO ME. No months long teasers and trailers and whatnots. I didn’t even know SSE was about to debut a new gg until they opened SNS accounts for KiiiKiii, then a few days later, they already drop an MV. Call me old fashioned, but dozens of random photos and videos don’t really get me hyped for a music release, even for groups I know and like, let alone rookies. But dropping a song so we can get an idea of what their sound and style will be has definitely piqued my interest.
– Decent live vocals from the get-go. Sure, they use some backtrack, but I didn’t have to strain my ears to hear their live singing, it could be heard pretty well, and the girls did a good job delivering their lines. With such strong introduction, I can’t wait to see how much they grow and improve over the years.
– Laid-back overall vibe. I say overall, because it’s not just the dance/performance, styling etc., it’s also how SSE promotes them so far. This is probably the most complicated to grasp, but seeing their recently uploaded dance practice really solidified it for me that they are very 2nd gen coded. For this dance practice, there were no coordinated (and sponsored) clothes, no flashy camera-work to make the dance more interesting than it actually is. Just a fixed shot of 5 girls having fun dancing to a song, giggling, feet pounding and shoes squeaking on the floor. I know it’s nothing serious, but watching it felt like a breath of fresh air.
I really appreciate how KiiiKiii don’t seem to be meticulously engineered to absolute perfection. How their “everyday girl” concept is not just embodied in their styling/sound, but also the way their company promotes them. As someone commented on YT under the dance practice video “…the strongest characteristic of this group is how genuine and non extremely curated everything is…”. I, personally, couldn’t agree more with this statement. What are your thoughts?
