I don’t think being a lead vocalist is just about singing well.
As the second or third vocal pillar, you support the main vocal through harmonies, ad‑libs, and layers — like appetizers or color accents in a dish.
Sometimes you’re expected to step in for the main vocal when needed.
And you often serve as a “shadow ace”, contributing through visuals, star quality, personality, variety skills, or even dance/rap versatility.
From that perspective, I personally think Sullyoon is one of the best examples.
NMIXX’s biggest strength is their “unfair” vocal line centered around Lily, Haewon, and Kyujin, plus each member’s explosive individuality that lets them pull off complex mix‑pop on stage. But the presence of Sullyoon — a main‑vocal‑level singer who is also one of 4th‑gen’s strongest main visuals — boosts NMIXX’s visual line by threefold, which in turn amplifies their already unreasonable vocal power.
In most other groups or scenes, she would’ve been a 120% center and ace without question. Among recent girl groups, she’s honestly an absurdly overpowered character.
As for 3rd–5th gen, I also feel that Yeji (ITZY), Chaewon (LE SSERAFIM), Eunbi & Yena (IZ*ONE), Rora (BABYMONSTER), Seulgi (Red Velvet), and Winter (aespa)
