When discussing the negative reputations of groups on K-pop Reddit, you often get groups like Blackpink, Aespa, Newjeans, Allday Project, Babymonster, Cortis, Stray Kids, and more as some of these group’s fandoms tend to not interact outside of their created sub-Reddit for their groups. However, whenever new fans join the K-pop Reddit community, they tend to check out these groups that have such a negative reputation around them and eventually become fans of these said groups. Often times when commenters discuss the negative reception of these groups they often point to their music, controversies, and toxic fans in their fandom which had caused a lot of people to turn away from these groups and give them and their fans a cold shoulder. A lot of times, it has to do with the popularity and success of the group’s they dislike as many had felt that they don’t understand why the group’s they dislike are so popular instead of the groups they appreciate and stan. I mean there are posts/unpopular opinions from nonfans not understanding how groups like Blackpink, Stray Kids, and Cortis had gotten so big with their music even though these groups tend to attract a certain audience that likes the music that they release.
Many commenters had downplayed this to just a “more popular=more hate” type of strategy hence why these groups have such a bad reputation in the community amongst non-fans. However, I don’t that is the case as a lot of times there are popular and influential groups that are well liked in the K-pop Reddit community or has a big fandom that pushed back against the hate causing antis to back off and move to another group. While in the case of these groups, there is just too many nonfans to fight back against hence why some of these group’s fanbases tend to migrate to their own sub where antis won’t bother them. Then the case with new fans joining these subs, they often here about these negative reputations particularly from posts or other non-fans and would check out these groups and ending up becoming a fan of them in the process. This had often cause me to wonder why these specific groups were targeted when most these factors could apply to many K-pop groups inside the industry.
