it is absolutely due to the lack of actual talents on the kpop scene right now
it worked really well in bts. they had a dance line, which was two main dancers and a lead dancer with center position, and also separated into a vocal line and a rap line. so everyone served a very specific purpose in the group. yeah, suga or rm can’t sing – but they don’t have to because it’s not their purpose. and i think that’s a really good thing in a group.
i do think that change might be slightly because of how the line distributions are so much more fair now. fans are forcing on companies that their favorite idol has more lines, even when he has no talent for that whatsoever.
another great example is blackpink, which has a good vocalist, a great dancer, two good rappers. it makes a great lineup where all needs are met.
or seventeen. the divide into a hiphop team, a performance team and a vocal team makes every member somehow have a reason in that group.
now do bigger groups have filler members? of course. i think every 6+ kpop group has some members that are just more to be there and less to serve a specific purpose.
but it feels right now like some groups consist only or mostly of filler members.
(alsooo the filler members used to know they’re filler members because they have positions like “sub dancer, sub vocalist”)
right now you look at the best vocalist in the group and they’re not even that good. you look at the main rapper and it’s just a member who can’t sing so they make them talk fast instead (tho that always was a thing in kpop). it’s often not even clear who the main/lead something is and people have to figure that out in the songs. only dance is something that truly gets better in the next generations (esp 5th gen).
it used to be sooo much easier to get into a group because you immediately knew what is unique about a member. also there was less hate about an idol not dancing/singing, because they had a different thing they’re really good at. now everything’s MID AF
