I made a Korean Helmet Beanie

I made a Korean Helmet Beanie

It’s not that cold yet, so maybe a bit early for this kind of post—but I really wanted to share a product I’ve been working on.

Since last year, I’ve been practicing traditional Korean archery, which got me deeply interested in Korea’s martial heritage and craftsmanship.

Earlier this year, I was planning a business trip to the U.S., and I wanted to buy some gifts for my friend’s kids (around 3–4 years old). But it was surprisingly hard to find something that was cute and playful without being overly asserting Korean culture.

So I decided to make something myself. I commissioned a knitter online to create an idea I’d been sketching for a while — a winter beanie shaped like a traditional Korean helmet (투구). You’ve probably seen Viking or medieval knight helmet beanies online — I basically reimagined that concept through a Korean lens.

One detail I’m especially proud of: on traditional Korean helmets, the long hanging fabric on the sides is called “Deurim” (드림). In dramas it often flaps like a basset hound’s ears, but historically, it was tied around the neck to protect vital areas during battle.

So I designed my version with drawstrings, so kids can tie it up and keep their cheeks and neck warm in winter.

When the first prototype arrived, it was honestly adorable.

My U.S. trip ended up getting canceled, so I kept the sample — and I submitted it to the Museum Foundation of Korea’s “MU:DS” design competition, where it actually won!

After months of waiting (and watching others sell out their non-seasonal products 😅), I finally delivered the first batch to the museum right before the holidays.

It’s now available in-store at the National Folk Museum of Korea (Gyeongbokgung Palace), and will soon be sold at the National Museum of Korea and online museum shops as the weather gets colder.

For now, it’s available online through Naver Smart Store(smartstore.naver.com/studiomanu), and I’m preparing an Etsy launch for international orders soon.

The Korean won is weak these days — so hey, perfect time to grab one 😉
