specifically talking about lesserafim, illit and katseye’s recent releases
their recent music is getting a lot of hate and frankly i think it is for good reason. im all for trying new concepts and sounds, dont get me wrong. But hybe is specifically picking and choosing alternative electronic dance music for the girls and thats irritating the fuck out of me
these sorts of alternative music are not mainstream (well, hence the name alternative) because they are weird, personal, or made just to dance to. Theyre not formulaic like pop is. The artists make it for the love of music and they chose to express themselves in this unique way. The artists who wrote some of the released songs (eg. Alice Longyu Gao and Sorana) dress alternative too – bleached brows and vivid hair, clothes that dont seem to make any visual sense, they are true to their craft.
As you can hear in the lyrics of songs like Boompala and Gnarly, theyre nonsensical and unpoetic. What is “BoompalaBoompalayeah” and why are we talking about Teslas amiright??? but they make sense to the lyricist. Alice Longyu Gao (the writer of Gnarly) talked in a tiktok about how fried chicken felt gnarly because of a guy she met on a first date who really loved fried chicken.
Then here we have the girls who, offstage, are just typical trend followers, like 90% of the people in this subreddit. They have fast fashion outfits, love the popular korean makeup brands and you will never catch any of them wearing bright eyeshadow with weird eyeliner off stage.
I am not hating on the girls – thats the last thing i will ever do. I know damn well theyre just doing their jobs and fulfilling what the company is asking of them. I’ll even say theyre doing a really good job performing the songs. Katseye’s stage presence is so so electric, illit pull off their Its Me stage outfits and gosh Lesserafim sings boompala like they mean every word.
And i know kpop as a whole has always been about following trends and being inauthentic. Idols are camera ready characters who should be singing and dancing flawlessly. They rarely even participate or have any say in the production of their music and their art. It just feels like Hybe is trying to rewrite the rules and set their girl groups apart from the other groups chasing the y2k and cute trends. But its damn hard to sound unique when you dont mean it, and its hard to make the girls feel relatable when even they wont make the music they are releasing even if they tried. I feel the same about Iconic By Mistake as a whole as well.
I also really hate that with hybe releasing alternative music, it pushes the sound to the mainstream and it results in mainstream fans hating on it because “it sounds like noise” not realising they arent even originally the targeted audience
I just wish hybe would just…stop. Even Katseye begs for a song where they can riff their hearts off 😞
