CW: Discussion of legal and moral controversies and adult-industry involvement.
Disclaimer: This topic is highly subjective and everyone’s view shouldn’t be frowned upon, only critiqued from a reasonable and civil position.
Kpop has seen it’s fair share of controversies over the years and I feel like people always come back to this statement of ‘separating the art from the artist’. It’s a difficult topic to discuss due to its controversial and subjective nature but I would like to hear your independent views and possibly examples of when you would and wouldn’t.
I’ve brought this question up due to two pretty different topics I’ve personally had the decision in navigating.
- The first topic would be Somyi’s post-DIA career. Somyi’s downfall after leaving the group consisted of joining an adult-centric streaming platform as well as legal trouble following false accusations. During her time in DIA I enjoyed her as an idol, from singing to performance and general on-screen personality. My view on this situation is to not erase the past (still listen to music she features in without feeling guilty etc) due to her personal actions not affecting the groups brand, music or performances, however, we shouldn’t disregard her post-DIA controversies. Overall, it’s your decision whether or not to still support her currently or historically and ig it’s not for us to decide the morality of her choices, but we can decide our own level of engagement with her work.
- The second one is relatively new and still fresh on people’s minds and damaged the group’s reputation significantly (girl group). From this, you can probably assume who I am talking about, and it’s a situation where I cannot openly discuss due to it being fresh, without things going south, and I’m not the right person to speak my mind on it. (I encourage civil debating and comment). The statement still applies to this situation and for me, it’s more of a grey area.
Overall, I’d like to hear your views on examples you provide, possible comments on the ones listed above and how you go about when a group you love perhaps disappoints you with a scandal or controversy. In addition, the examples mentioned above are merely to aid with the questions goal of finding out others people’s view on the question (the title) not the specific groups I mentioned.
