(for anyone who doesnt know, a black ocean is when the audience intentionally turns off their lightsticks during an artist’s performance to show their disapproval or that they’re upset about something)
so at KCON 2026, there was an “alleged” black ocean for All Day Project. im saying alleged because theres been clips going around on social media that show the audience going dark during their performance but i dont know how we can tell from the clips alone whether it was actually an organised black ocean or just the crowd not having their lightsticks on. and with the recent news about RM and J-hope going to the CB concert, i’ve seen some fans suggesting that there should be a black ocean for them too to show that they’re upset with this.
im kind of conflicted about them. i think it really depends on the situation and what the black ocean is actually being done over. like i can understand why fans would want to do one if they feel strongly enough about something an artist has done and normal criticism or boycotting doesnt feel like enough to express how upset they are or if they feel like no action is being taken. but at the same time, it can come across as very hostile and disrespectful to the artist performing.
also i dont think i’ve heard of fans organising black oceans that often. have they ever actually worked tho and accomplished anything beyond showing that the audience is upset? i’d love to hear all of your thoughts on this as well.
