I’m a bit late but Happy 10th anniversary to Wonder Girls last comeback, Why So Lonely. Following their 3 year hiatus and re-brand as a band with 2015’s Reboot album Wonder Girls continued their retro style, this time opting more for 70s reggae vs 80s synth. After their heavy involvement in the making of Reboot, WSL became their first single that JYP himself was not involved in. The song was both a critical and commercial hit, and they promoted both a band and choreo version.
The single album also features the great Beautiful Boy and Sweet and Easy.
I can vividly remember when this song came out, it was actually my first comeback as a fan as I only got into kpop after the release of Reboot (although technically WG were my first exposure to kpop seeing them open for Jonas Brothers). It came out around the same time as Beast’s Ribbon (also my first comeback as a fan) and I remember heavily replaying the music videos.
Its sad that Wonder Girls had one of the best re-inventions in kpop and we only got 2 comebacks out of it, with one only being a single album (plus the disbandment song Draw Me). I understand them wanting to branch out and I’ve enjoyed a lot of their solo work but man I would’ve loved more out of Wonder Band. I wonder if this happened today if they would maybe do the more common route of slowing down and maybe moving to different companies for solos but having the occasional comeback every few years, instead of a hard disband.
But anyways I am still glad we got these two amazing comebacks and I’m happy Wonder Girls were able to end on a high note.
