As a Khmer (Cambodian), I’m really sorry to you Koreans for that incident where a Korean student was scammed into Cambodia and brutally assaulted—it must’ve been shocking for you all.

I’m a Khmer (a majority ethnic in Cambodia), and I want to sincerely apologize to all of you for the recent incident involving a Korean student who was lured to Cambodia and brutally assaulted. I know this news has shocked and angered many of you, and I’m truly sorry for the pain it’s caused.

Recently, I heard about yet another case of a foreigner being scammed and harmed in Cambodia, this time a Korean, and it’s sparked outrage in Korean SNS. Honestly, it’s disheartening to see my country repeatedly strain relationships with major partners like South Korea, one of our biggest investors, after similar issues with China. As a Khmer, I’m deeply disappointed in our government. Instead of using South Korea’s generous investments for progress, they’ve allegedly collaborated with groups like the Chinese Triads to turn Cambodia into a hub for online scam centers targeting Asians, especially Koreans and Southeast Asians. What’s worse, many of us locals are unaware of these scams because Cambodia’s media, heavily influenced by the daughter of former leader Hun Sen, suppresses the truth and floods us with anti-Thai propaganda. It’s a tactic straight out of North Korea’s playbook—stoking blind nationalism to distract from domestic failures.

I’m truly ashamed that my fellow Cambodians have lured and harmed Koreans. From the bottom of my heart, I once again sincerely apologize Korean for what Cambodia have done.
