I feel like K-pop as a whole is prone to push us all into our own little echo chambers, reinforcing beliefs and biases and possibly without us realising. Especially when you only really listen to a few groups, even more so if you listen to groups from the same company, and even more so if you listen to just one or two groups.
It’s been evident with some recent discussions that a lot of people are all in their own echo chambers but aren’t exactly aware of it. Talking about songs being global hits when they maybe went slightly viral on tiktok, or how big groups are.
I know for one that I’m in a few of my own echo chambers, to the point that I thought that I was being a complete sheeple choosing to read east of eden, assuming that was the trend everywhere. I know I’m in an echo chamber in regards to AI, politics, and more, always seeing like-minded individuals express their views on various topics. And even with the groups I like, everything happens in an echo chamber.
I think these echo chambers we exist in also cause a lot of strife in the K-pop community, because some groups are amplified in one person’s bubble but not in another’s. It’s causing a lot more separation than before with all these algorithms. Even leading people to assume that XYZ person isn’t getting any hate for something their faves did when that person has faced criticism.
It can feel like your faves are constantly being persecuted because you exist in a bubble that focuses on them, and therefore you don’t see anything else, causing more upset than necessary. So maybe this is a necessary reminder to *everyone*, it’s not a bad thing per se, but it just bears reminding that just because you didn’t see anything doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.
